Dient een gsm nog om te bellen?

Bij de nieuwste gsm-toestellen wordt de bel-functie steeds meer van ondergeschikt belang. De telecomsector zet zwaar in op videobeelden, muziek en videogames. Vooral video-conferencing wordt een grote toekomst voorspeld. Maar door de steeds gesofistikeerde toepassingen, dreigt de gebruiker ook compleet verloren te lopen.

Gsm-fabrikanten blijven naar nieuwe toepassingen zoeken. Zo toonde Samsung op het 3GSM World Congress in Cannes een mobieltje dat een tv-signaal uit de ether of van de satelliet haalt en haarscherp op het kleine scherm van de gsm toont. Ook willen ze zich ook meer richten op de muzieksector en gaan daarmee de concurrentie aan met producenten van draagbare muziekspelers.

Een aantal producenten van mobiele telefoons heeft overeenkomsten gesloten met belangrijke spelers op het gebied van digitale muziek. Marktleider Nokia maakte bekend een deal te hebben gesloten met Microsoft en met Loudeye, een muziekgroothandel op internet. Motorola presenteerde een mobiele telefoon met daarop muzieksoftware van Apple, terwijl Sony Ericsson dit jaar mobieltjes wil gaan verkopen onder de Walkman-naam.

Anders Igel, bestuursvoorzitter van het Scandinavische telecombedrijf TeliaSonera, stelde echter dat telefoontjes tegenwoordig veel te ingewikkeld zijn. “Voor mobieltjes met ingebouwde camera`s moet men soms wel twaalft toetsen indrukken,” stipte hij aan. “Een klant die het de eerste keer niet lukt, haakt voor altijd af.”

Uit Brits onderzoek blijkt dat eenderde van de mobiele bellers zichzelf ziet als technofoob. Slechts elf procent vindt zichzelf intelligent genoeg om een boodschap met foto te sturen.
